Sid Bacon

Yesterday was a good day.  I was awake for most of it.

The day before I slept until 1:00 and really got out-of-sync with my medication. I paid the price.  From now on, Cathy and/or Laura will need to wake me … short straw loses. 

I still do not have an appetite, but I can eat.  Last night our friends John and Mary brought dinner – home-made soup, home-made ice-cream, salad and super moist cornbread … it was absolutely delicious.  Cathy and I just finished seconds today for lunch. It was good the second time around.  

As always, thanks for all your love and support.  It means a great deal to Cathy and me. 

These past three days have been pretty good. I have been wakeful for almost the entire day. It is also great having somewhat of an appetite. That makes a huge difference in how I feel. The past 18 months have brought a heightened focus on what is important, and the past several weeks have only intensified that focus. Research and teaching are among the things I find most important and fulfilling.  In recent years, I helped create and teach a seminar for undergraduates interested in pursuing a PhD and a career in speech and hearing research. 

After talking with Cathy, Laura, and Dan, we have decided to create a memorial scholarship.  We envision the Sid P. Bacon Memorial Research Scholarship going toward an undergraduate in the Department of Speech and Hearing Science who are interested in research.

It has been an honor to work with so many fine colleagues and wonderful students over the years.  I am hopeful that this scholarship will continue to contribute to the field for years to come, even if only in a small way.
