Hot Tuesday ...

Written June 4, 2013 1:13pm

We are well into the triple digits, and the long-range forecast doesn’t have us escaping those temperatures for some time. That is one of the reasons I haven’t been walking lately; the more pressing reason is that I am just too fatigued to go on a walk.  I know I need to get out and walk, so perhaps I’ll try it some evening.  I also need to eat more.  I’m not eating much, so I’m losing weight on a regular basis. Not good, but I just do not have an appetite, despite Cathy’s valiant efforts to fix me something that would taste good.  I’m pretty discouraged.  Though Laura and Cathy are doing their best to keep me in a good mood, to keep me in good spirits.

Laura has been spending most of her days and nights at our house … it is a real treat for me.  She takes excellent care of me.  Between she and Cathy, I’m in the best hands I could possibly be in.  Now, if we could just reverse the weight loss trend I’d be very happy.  And I’d have more energy.  It is just so hard to eat when you don’t have an appetite.  I try, but it is just so hard to eat.

We were all happy with the Heat’s victory.  Now they just have to beat the Spurs and we will really be happy.

I ask that you cheer me on for eating; that is my biggest hurdle right now and I really need the help.  At this pace I am going to lose way too much weight. Perhaps they’ll put me back on TPN so I can get calories that way.

As always, Cathy and I appreciate your love and support.  It means so much to us.

Go Team Bacon!

An extra visit to Piper ...

Written June 7, 2013 3:17pm

We were not scheduled to go to Piper until next Thursday. But when I wrote to one of my medical professionals to give them an update of my progress, she got me in tomorrow morning. It is nice to have such responsive medical professionals.

We’ll go there by 9:00 AM and will start receiving IV fluids and will do bloodwork right away, including the tumor marker (CA19-9). I’ll get the results by about 10, and will meet with someone at that time.

We’ll be anxious to hear the results of the tumor marker test.  If the value has gone down, we’ll stay with the chemo on.  If not, then we have run out of treatment options. That would make for an easy blog tomorrow.

Be well!

TGIF …

Written June 7, 2013 4:55pm

We spent the morning at Piper. It was nice to be back among the special caregivers.

The tumor marker had dropped, which was good news, although Gayle was not optimistic that this would parlay into more treatments. Dr. Ramanathan does not want to treat when I am weak.  TPN isn’t really an option, as the cancer would attack those calories as well. Although she says no one “but the man upstairs”  knows for sure, her own estimate is weeks not months. 52 weeks rather than 12 months. Works for me.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend.  Stay cool and plenty hydrated. It is dangerously hot in the valley.

Thanks for all your love and  support!

A Full House

Written June 11, 2013 11:26pm

Greetings from the hot, hot desert.  It is the time of year to enjoy the view of the mountains from an air conditioned living room.

I enjoyed a nice weekend with a full house of family.  Cathy and Laura continue to be by my side.  We were joined by my sister, Su, in town from Kansas City, my brother-in-law, Paul, in town the Black Hills, and Dan, who conspired with Cathy to surprise me for the weekend. While my energy and appetite remain low, I still enjoy having the love and laughter of family around.  We enjoyed some good food, some fun (depending on who you ask) games, some nostalgic stories, and plenty of laughs.  It is nice to reminisce over old stories while still creating new memories with my loved ones.

Dan left on Sunday night, Paul on Monday morning, and Su on Tuesday morning.  On Monday, we had our first visit with a representative from Hospice of the Valley.  On Tuesday, we had the chance to meet with Megan and Nick, who comprise part of our "core" hospice team.  Megan will handle the social worker aspect of the care, while Nick will be our go-to for nursing care.  Both were very kind and personable and it is bittersweet to have them join our medical team that already includes so many wonderful professionals from Piper and Mayo.

As always, it is important to keep my focus on things to look forward to.  I look forward to a private violin concert on Friday, courtesy of Dan's mother-in-law, Cathy.  I also have several visits from family members scheduled for the coming weekend.  Moreover, I look forward to all the love and support I receive from Team Bacon in the form of guestbook entries, cards, and other well wishes.  These messages, whether small or large, short or long, are so meaningful to me and my family.

Thanks for fighting with me!

Anticipatory TGIF ,,,

After getting up this morning, I wasn’t clear how I felt; throughout the day, however it became evident. I thought morning was night and that and night was morning, and we still had our visitors, Paul and Su.  It was very strange. Add that to my “story finding” problems from the day before, and I’m a mental wreck!

I better get a good night’s sleep, and perhaps never do that again… I blame the recliner.  I get too comfortable in the evening.

Thanks for all your love and support!

Have a nice weekend if I should not post tomorrow. (I'm pretty sure today is Thursday!).
