Toasts to Sid

Before the memorial service we invited everyone to share a "toast to Sid", which were printed and displayed at the reception.  Please enjoy these toasts and feel free to add your own.

best hire

Sid, you are the best hire I ever was associated with, and I have such monumental respect for your contributions and your place in science, especially the science of these ears and tongues we use so much (almost every day).  You have created a legacy in hearing science that no future conscientious scholar, ever, will be able to ignore. When I think of giants of science (acoustic), I think of Wheatstone, Ohm, Helmholtz, Fechner, Zwislocki, von Bekesy, Jerger, and Eardrum. Bacon is a contemporary who is at that table as well. (We missed sending out our Xmas letter this year because I was in Shanghai, Corinne was in the emergency room with back pain (better now), the loss of our nephew, and the move of our department to a new, refurbished building…so we got way behind.) Corinne handles the praying in our family, but I get very involved with generating positive and grateful thoughts about good friends and doing my best to send them and let them know what we think.  We will be transporting these psychokinetic waves across the swamps to the desert to both of you. Know that your friends are empathic, care for you greatly, and wish you courage to face this challenge.

love and courage

I learned a great deal from my academic interactions with Sid and I consider myself fortunate to have spent a few years as one of his colleagues.  As I reflect, however, I think I learned even more from Sid about love and courage as I observed the way he handled the last year and months of his life.  I am glad the torments are gone and that he is at peace.

Cheers!

Sid, you were one of the absolute best professors of my matriculation process at ASU.  How you could teach a dry topic like hearing science and keep me on the edge of my seat wanting to learn more, more, more is a mystery to me.  For that, I thank you.

You were a large influence on my acceptance to grad school at ASU.  For that, I thank you.

And, all the while you were hot and handsome -- what a delightful bonus!  For that, I thank you.

It was an honor to know you and study under you.  For everything mentioned and forgotten, I thank you.

Cheers!

To Sid

To Sid Bacon, a corner stone of one of the best families I have ever known. I very much admire Sid’s warm heart, wit and charm. I will be forever grateful for all the Thanksgivings and time we spent at the Bacon house. I hope that when I have a family I can be the type of man that Sid was, he will always be a role model for me.

Thank you

You were an amazing Dean, mentor, colleague, and most importantly friend.  I missed you incredibly when you exited your position as the Natural Sciences Dean, and now, knowing that you are gone, there will always be a permanent void in my life.  I consider myself very lucky to have had the opportunity to work closely with you for the four years you served as Dean.  We made an excellent team!  I miss the conversations we would have about our families, travel, and just life in general.  You taught me more than you will ever know about how to be an effective academic administrator and I carry these same standards throughout my career.  I will forever be in debt to you for the guidance and mentorship you so willingly offered to me.  You were one of the most fair people I have ever been fortunate enough to know.  I miss your great wit, your dry sense of humor, and I promise to use my semi-colons effectively and to never forget your age, as you are only 20 years older than me.

Thank you for having been my mentor and friend.
