CaringBridge Feb. 12
Sid was headed to pick up his race packet for the Rock n Roll marathon when his doctor called with results of an ultrasound showing a mass on his pancreas and spots on his liver. After a LONG 10 days of tests and waiting it was confirmed: Stage IV pancreatic cancer. We feel fortunate to be surrounded by the love of family and friends, and in the care of excellent medical professionals as he begins this journey. We will use this website to post updates on Sid. Please write us a note in our guestbook. Your messages are an inspiration for us!

In the end, the tortoise beats the hare.  We are happy that today brought steady progress, rather than the steep roller coaster we had been experiencing.

After a morning of rest, Dad was back in his yard.  He was up and about for almost an hour, watering the yard and cleaning out the fountain.  In the afternoon he reclined in the backyard and soaked up some of the beautiful weather.

Sid's day was also brightened by visits from family and co-workers.  We (mainly his gluttonous family) have been chowing down on all the treats Dad has been showered with.

Keep cheering for a tortoise journey!

Sid Battles Cancer and Weeds

Written February 11, 2012 8:13pm

Look out weeds; not even cancer will keep Sid from pulling you!  This morning was the best morning Dad has had in almost two weeks.  He woke up feeling stronger, ate some food, and went for a 35-40 minute walk around the neighborhood.  To top off the morning, he returned to his favorite hobby of pulling weeds.

The highs of the morning were followed by reminders from his body to take it slowly.  He got in a short rest, and gathered the strength to enjoy a visit from a co-worker.  This evening we've been enjoying the company of extended family (who are helping to consume the contents of the overflowing gift baskets).

The peaks and valleys of the last month have been survived by the amazing outpouring of love and support.  Sid continues to enjoy checking the snail-mail and guestbook of CaringBridge: keep all the great messages of encouragement coming!

Feeling stronger every day!

Although Dan had to go back to San Diego this morning, we'll try to keep the journal entries flowing (especially because Dan can still do them from San Diego! ...).

I feel even stronger today than yesterday!  I have been eating (grazing) and keeping hydrated throughout the day.  Laura, Cathy, and I have had extended family around all weekend, which - along with all your well wishes - has helped keep my spirits and energy up.  I was able to do some work and go for a  nice walk in the desert ... it was another beautiful day, though a bit cooler than the past several days (but I won't complain about temperatures in the upper 60s - I still need your sympathy! ...).  The two to three days after chemo are supposed to be the worst, so I am hopeful that I'll be even stronger tomorrow than today.  The next chemo treatment is scheduled for Thursday ... we are attacking this disease with vigor from all angles.

Thanks to all of you who have been thinking about us.  You are playing an incredibly important role in this fight.  As Dan says: We fight together!

Diet plans beware!

Written February 13, 2012 5:55pm

After spending the last few weeks as the poster boy for weight loss diets, I’m putting Jenny Craig and all the others on notice: My appetite is coming back!  Not only am I eating more, but more and more foods sound good to me.  We are meeting with a dietician at the Piper Cancer Center on Thursday during my chemo treatment, at which time we hope to gain a better understanding of what foods I should avoid and what ones I should attack with a vengeance.   I think Cathy and Laura are a little concerned that some of the goodies that people have been sending us can now go on my plate!!

As I had predicted and hoped, today was an even better day than yesterday.  Laura and I went on a 40-minute walk, and although I’ve rested a few times, I haven’t needed to nap to keep my strength up. Here is looking towards an even better day tomorrow.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
